Deputy Ambassador, British Embassy, Yangon
Ruth took up her position as the UK’s Deputy Ambassador to Myanmar in March 2021. She previously worked in Myanmar in 2007-2013 as the British Embassy’s political officer and as coordinator for the Myanmar Peace Support Initiative.
Ruth’s diplomatic career has spanned over 15 years, working mainly on conflict and security issues. Previous work has included a posting in Ethiopia in 2015-2016, as head of the migration team and UK Representative to Djibouti; head of the UK’s Iran nuclear negotiation team in 2013-2014; and as part of the UK’s EU Presidency in 2005-2006, leading on Africa and development. She was most recently Deputy Head of the FCDO’s North East Asia and Pacific Department, leading work on the Korean Peninsula and Japan.
Ruth is a keen champion for gender equality. She was Chair of the FCDO’s women’s network from 2019-2021 having previously established the network’s learning and development offer to its members.
