Joanna Place

Chief Operating Officer, Bank of England

Joanna was appointed the Bank of England’s Chief Operating Officer in July 2017 and previously was the Executive Director of Human Resources. Joanna has spent most of her career at the Bank and has worked in many areas including Banking Supervision, International, Markets and Private Office. She headed the Statistics Division as her first Head of Division role, and also led Customer Banking during the financial crisis. Her career has also included a secondment to the Border Agency. Joanna currently has responsibility for the day to day management of the Bank including Finance, Technology, Information and Physical Security, Human Resources, Property and Procurement.

After an Economics degree at Cambridge University, Joanna studied for a PGCE and spent two years as a Maths & PE teacher at a secondary school in Kent.

Joanna is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development; an Independent Director for the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment; a Trustee of Blind in Business; and a School Governor at a state school for 11-16 year olds.

Interests include walking, running and swimming. And she is also kept busy with three teenage children.
